Potts fly collection

Hi, I have a very rare collection of potts flies, they are in a framed shadow box and in the top right corner there is a trademark. There are 30 flies, each on a small cork and each with a name. The top reads Pott Fly Co. "Since 1924" then on the left P.O. Box 4022, Missoula MT 59806 and on the right under the trademark (406) 549-9800. My late husband was a good friend of George Grants and learned to tie the famous George Grant flies from him until his death at 103. I also have all of George Grant's books, autographed and a collection of 12 George Grant flies all tied by George and autographed by George.

If I would ever decide to sell these collections, what would they be worth and where would I begin to market them?

Thanks
Kathy

Good luck on fishing the Madison. One of the best sources of info and flies is in West Yellowstone, MT at Blue Ribbon Flies. Owners Craig and Jackie Matthews. If they are not in the shop Craig is probably fishing somewhere along the Madison. He is a great source of information about the whole area including Yellowstone Nat'l Park.

I fish just about all the river drainage area, ie, Firehole river in the Park the Upper Madison, Hebgen and Quake lakes and the Lower Madison.

One of the best places to start fishing would be at 3 Dollar Bridge, (free access, wade or bank fishing only). Flies will vary with the season but a sure bet this late summer are the use of terrestrials, ie
grasshoppers, beetles, ants, etc. Good luck.

If you are staying in Bozeman don't pass up a chance to fish the Gallatin River just west of town.

As a kid growing up in Idaho we fished the Lost River valley and surrounding areas. The fly we used most was a Sandy Mite and the Lady mite. I learned to tie these from my dad and uncle who have both now passed on. the Sandy Mite was tied by using dark red or brown finer horse hair from the mane and a light to dark red yarn for the belly. the Lady Mite was tied with lighter cream to light brown horse hair and a yellow to pale yellow belly. the fly was a challenge to tie as a youngster and I haven't tied any for years, but I remember fishing the Lost River Canyon Creek when the Bull trout were in abundance. Fished wet and even with weight to get it down deeper in the swift water was the ticket. We used horse hair because we had horses, I never knew it was tied with any other kind of hair. I haven't tied this fly in years but have a few in my collection...time to try.

I'm honestly not sure if I want to sell them and if I did I would want them to go to an enthusiast/collector. I have 12 NIB that were made by the Finline Tackle Co in Denver and a couple others including a new Sandy Mite in the cardboard that were made by F.B. himself. The 12 are from the 40's and the others I imagine are from around there too. Let me know if there's interest. Thanks, Paul

I fish a weighted Wolly Muddler often, and tie it the easiest way possible. I do not like to wrap lead on the shank, as it distorts the dimensions of the fly. A simple way is to use a bead...tungsten if you desire depth. I also cast them using a sink tip which carries the bigger flies much better than a floating line, and allows you to use less wt on the fly allowing more motion of the fly. One of the finest tips is the steelhead/salmon tipped lines in different grains... 175, 200 gr. etc. Strip in to the color change, and then cast the 24 ft. tip as your backcast length(you can allow 3ft of overhang) shooting the rest, and the one density off of the tip tracks the best with much less danger of hooking yourself on the cast. Let the angle of your cast, and stripping determine what depth you want to achieve. I can cast and fish a 24 ft. tip in three feet of water, or in 10 ft. of water, and achieve depth in both according to my casting angle, and stripping. The wt. on the head of your fly will dip and rise the muddler in jigging, effective way.

Howdy all, I’m a bit new to fly fishing. I have played around for a summer in the Sierras with a fly rod before, but I have little insight on these eastern rivers and streams. I am in central New Jersey now with many questions on early season flies and setups. I have never dabbled in the early season game. Any suggestions?

If anyone is interested I will be placing a box of 120 mites, mostly traditional Lady, sandy and rockworm, and with some of my own local use body color variations on ebay this week. Size 10 seems to be the most productive with some size 6 in the ladymite and rockworm.FYI if you are fishing this fly correctly you have to be able to see it. I am more than happy to know that people are still looking for them. I have been tying and fishing these patterns for 28 yrs and actually fished a #6 sandy on the weber yesterday and had more action on it than any nymph rig I could put together. Dan Bailey's used to be the only supplier and discontinued selling them. I hope I can fill the void without stepping on any toes.watrous_pc@yahoo.com

Michael A. Tucker Wrote:
-------------------------------------------------------
> The Sandy Mite was developed by Mr. Potts from
> Missoula, Montana. He was a barber and wig maker.
> Mr. Potts designed the fly with ox hair and the
> belly stripe to prevent the hair from coming
> unraveled during extended use. Mr. George Grant,
> who is a deep friend of mine and whom I have also
> had numerous conversations with, extended his
> insight through our long discussions about Mr.
> Potts. Mr. Potts' flies have always intrigued Mr.
> Grant and stimulated his thought process in the
> Weaving of hair hackles. Mr. Potts guarded his
> passion for his design and would not show anyone
> how to weave his way. This created a thought in
> Mr. Grant to start weaving hair because of the
> importance of the hackle. Mr. Grant developed his
> own way to weave hair because of secrecy from
> Potts. It is very sad to say that I had a chance
> to talk with Mr. Grant for approximately 3 years.
> I do know that he is spending his life in a
> nursing home in Butte, Montana were his dreams are
> now his realities. Mr. Grant asked me directly if
> I would continue his beautiful craft. I agreed
> with honor. I weave his method but have establish
> my own type of hitch that is easier than his. I am
> ambitiously pursuing a new book on his philosophy
> with insights and add-ons that never been shown as
> of to date. I hope the book is excepted with grace
> and understanding of an idea to be extended from
> where Mr. Grant left off. If you shall have any
> further questions concerning any historical value
> about Mr. Grant or Mr. Potts I shall be always
> happy to share.
> Thank You,
> Michael A. Tucker
> Designer of the Liqua Fly
