Fishing in ME has been outstanding this year. Even though we had a very rough winter with lots of snow the melt was slow and gradual and the rivers never really got blown out. Bugs have been slow to hatch, but the subsurface fishing has been great. The Western part of the state has some nice spots to try. As a newbie start on the Androscoggin.

Just got back from a trip to Maine. Fished the Dead and Kennebec (briefly) near West Forks (lived there for 18 yrs before coming to MA). Tough sledding this time of year. Water is still too cold for hot fishing. There were some bugs coming of the water, mainly blue wing olives, but nothing taking on the surface regularly. It will heat up in another week or two and should be good fishing. If you're new to the water, just know it's dam controlled so you have a few hours in the morning and then the fishing pretty well shuts off during the day while the water is up.
Tried the West Branch of the Penobscot as well. Again, cold water and really no surface activity to speak of there, bugs or fish. Another two weeks and it should be HOT. We took a few salmon on terrestrials and streamers (I guess it's just dropping off the back side of one of the best smelt runs in years). Mostly small to medium fish (10-18 ins) but saw a few big guys chasing smelts in the evenings.

NW Maine had a bugger of a winter so the water is generally high and cold just about everywhere. Again, about two more weeks or so before you can expect solid, steady fishing but WELL WORTH IT!!

Mooselookmeguntic is great fishing, depending on which side you go on. You will need a license to fish in Maine - vacation licenses are $30 I believe.

In response to the other post, the Crooked River is great in the fall. Get up there and check it out!
