Mass Fishing

I have just moved from the banks of the Flathead River in Whitefish Mt. to the banks of the Boston Harbor and am having trouble figuring out where to fish. Salt or Fresh it doesn't matter. I asked the local fly shop but they said wait till the Stripers come for Salt and that it isn't worth it to fish the rivers in the winter in Mass. I need to hook into a fish soon! If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. Thank you.

Blair,
Saltwater in Mass..... there are lots of areas on the coast, Monomoy, Martha's Vineyard.... great flats fishing for stripers. Great opportunities.

Fresh water... look into the Deerfield, Westfield and also the swift when it is open. I know a few guides in that area that would be more than happy to share some info.

Check out www.yankeeangler.com and also www.neffguide.com

Hi Blair,
Larry has told you of a few rivers in Mass. but there is one that is in Connecticut that fishes exceptionally well all year and that is the Farmington River in Connecticut. It is a litlle over 2 hours from Boston but it is a very rewarding river. This past weekend there were many fish feeding on the surface taking caddis, stone flies and midges. There were a good number of anglers on the water but they were there to catch some fish which I think most were able to do.Next month the river will be closed for a while when the state puts some fish in the river but for the most part you will find a good number of wild fish that will come to a dry fly for 12 months of the year. There are rainbows, browns and small stocked Atlantic Salmon. An out of state season license is a great investment for $25.
Stripers won't be around for a while so if you want to get out right away and see some fish on the surface the Farmington is a great idea.

Blair, there is fishing for large freshwater fish primarily steelhead with some lake run browns in the lake Ontario tribs. About 6 hrs drive from Boston. Other than that the info you were given on the Farmington in Ct. may be your closest bet. There are trout ponds on Cape Cod though. Good luck. Once spring comes, the closest you'll find to western trout fishing would be the Delaware in NY. Big wild trout but hard to catch. In spring there are lots of stocked fish in Mass. It all depends on what you want to catch and how you feel about driving. I hope this helps. John D.

you want freshwater close to boston? Try the Squanacook, Nissitissit, or the Millers River...all are within an hour, or closer. I have been catching fish at these rivers for the past two months...holdovers...and at least the squan and niss were just stocked last week....let me know if you need directions.

I suggest you try ,at ice out Whites POND in Concord,MASS.these are stocked quite well with trout, and very clean, also try Walden Pond located right adjacent to Whites in Concord. If your willing to drive try Wachusett Reservoir in Clinton,Mass. trophy size lunkers ,and all shore fishing only if you are serious fisherman This body of water is excellent,,state records abound here!!!!!!!!

Hi Jerry:
I also fish the Niss and the Squanacook but have had little luck this past month. But I am also new to the area. What flies work well in May at the Niss? The only thjing that worked so far is the wooly bugger. Thanks in advance,
Jay
